This is the web site of the family of Jennie
and Eli Nachamson of Durham and Kinston North Carolina. One of the
most widely known Jewish families in North Carolina and in the South, their
story has been chronicled by Eli N. Evans in The Provincials : A Personal
History of Jews in the South and The
Lonely Days Were Sundays: Reflections of a Jewish Southerner. Mr.
Evans’s mother, Sara Nachamson Evans, was the wife of former Durham Mayor
E.J. "Mutt" Evans, who served as mayor from 1950 to 1962, through six consecutive
elections.
Jennie and Eli Nachamson both came from Lithuania to the United States as children in the 1880’s. The two villages they came from are noted in the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington as destroyed by the Nazis during the World War II. Thus, their decision to fulfill their dreams of a better life and set sail for America changed the destinies of their family. . . . . . . Click here for a more detailed family history. |
